Spring has Sprung for 2012

WHAT better way to start the new year than by focusing on what we will be wearing when spring arrives on the high street very soon?

The sales may not be quite finished yet and there certainly are some fabulous bargains to be had, but there’s nothing more exciting than seeing the arrival of the stores’ new collections and visualising the weather improving so that we’ll be able to wear the looks as soon as is humanly possible.

It may not feel like it at present, due to the wind, rain and cold weather, but don’t despair – we will be soon losing the layers and revealing a bit more flesh. It’s a time of year I personally love as we see the arrival of new colour palettes and the key trends for the hopefully balmy months to come.

Spring fashion trends on the catwalk indicate a definite return to femininity and glamour, and there’s certainly no lack of bold prints and womanly mystique.

Girls dressing as girls again, expect to see flowing dresses, cocoon shapes and hourglass figures.

Women’s fashions are floral- inspired, tropical-inspired, ethnicinspired, artist-inspired and scarfinspired. Sportswear is here to stay, but in a much more understated way thanks to sorbet colours and low-key silhouettes.

Don’t discard your floral fantasies just yet. Next season the trend continues with a high-octane dose of flower power, plus an equally amped-up version of colour blocking, or shall we say, lessons in geometry.

The decadent excess of the ’90s makes a comeback with printed bomber jackets and kaleidoscope patterns. The fashionista’s rule: the more, the better.

On a gentler side, femininity is just as alluring. Dainty cut-outs, sheer panelling and under-the-sea-inspired pieces will have you looking prim and perfect all season long.

Pastels are likely to be popular, with a lot of baby pinks, blues and yellows in different fabrics.

Princess chic is a key look and includes provocative sheer fashions to appease your romantic side.

Retro-inspired fashions from the ’20s through ’50s will also be big and include A-line dresses, pencil skirts, swing coats, and cloche hats.

Top hot list:

Let’s start out with oh so trendy preppy-inspired espadrilles. Think plaids, stripes, and nautical navy.

Do you crochet? Well it’s back. Crochet vests are big this spring. Maybe look to the back of your closet – you might have an old crochet number lurking.

The colour that jumps out at the head of the line for spring is orange. Less face it, there’s no other colour that can make as loud a fashion statement as tangerine.

Belt bags are one of the big trends. However, I’m not talking bum bags. Stick to the new small square flat belt version – so cute, and less weight to carry on that shoulder.

Feet need a rest this spring? Then the kitten heel is a good choice. They’re feminine and classic, as well as comfortable.

Stripes seem to hold a place in fashion year after year. From head to toe, you can’t go wrong with them.
