How to wear Neon for 2012
SAMANTHA Cameron caught the eye with her neon blouse on her visit to the States this week and neon is the perfect antidote to the sweet sorbets that are to be found everywhere.
Not that I don’t like a bit of on trend pastel once in a while, but neon in the right amounts just seems a bit cooler. Under the radar even, if that’s acceptable to say considering we’re talking luminous greens, yellows, pinks and oranges.
It takes confidence to wear neon. You certainly won’t go unnoticed, you’ll be revealed as the fashion loving creature that you are and you’ll never get away with pretending you’re in a neon green, elasticated over-skirt just because it was “hanging around”.
Oh no, neon is for victims (the fashion kind) so you better be prepared to wear it well.
Too much of anything is never good, especially neon. Personally I love to accessorise with neon, but if you’re daring enough to wear neon clothing it can be quite chic.
If you choose to pick up neon clothing, don’t overkill with a whole outfit. Nude, grey and navy go great with bright neons – it’s basically a balancing act. Marc by Marc Jacobs came over all sporty for spring by mixing neon brights with trainers and marl grey sweatshirts.
There’s such a wide selection on the high street, from T-shirts and jackets to ballerina skirts – the skirt is an awesome way to tap into this fun trend as it can be toned down with a denim jacket or a calmer more sedate colour.
Go for an oversized, voluminous sweater to mess up the proportions in just the right way and don’t shy away from statement jewellery just because you’re wearing a psychedelic dress or pair of trousers.
Go for gold if you dare, but if you feel like just dipping your toes in this trend then add a bit of neon by wearing a pop of colour in a strappy shoe or a colourful wedge – always a winner.
This is the season to clash prints and clash colour. There are no rules, just wear it in your own way. Neon is slightly frightening to men (unless they’re cyclists in which case you’re onto a winner) so you can afford to be a little sexy with a bustier. Remember, random combinations are the best!
1) Give colour blocking an update with clashing neons. If you’re brave enough that is.
2) Go head to toe in a neon dress. Just keep accessories quiet while your outfit screams out loud.
3) Be confident and own the look.
4) Wear neon lippie if the thought of neon clothing rouses awful childhood memories.
1) Do it half-heartedly. You’ve got to commit if you’re “doing” neon.
2) Overdo the fake tan. It works much better on someone with a natural glow than those who look like they’ve been tango-ed.
3) Go back to your ‘80s favourites. Shapes, fabrics and styles have changed dramatically, and it may be cyclical but it’s never the same!
